How to reboot a PS3

There are several reasons why you might need to restart your PS3. If your game or video has crashed, you can fix the problem with a quick restart. If you’ve changed your TV or cables, you may need to reset the video output settings. If it crashes frequently or if you have problems with the XMB, you may need to use the hard drive tools in safe mode.

Method 01

Restart a locked PS3

1. Press and hold the force button on the PS3. If your PS3 is locked, you can manually restart it. You will have to do it from the same console, it is very possible that the controls are also locked.

2. Press and hold the force button for about 30 seconds. You will hear three short beeps and your PS3 will shut down.

3. Wait a few seconds and then press the power button to turn it on again. Do not turn it on using the controller, as it may not detect the PS3.

4. Wait for the system to check the ps3 store error. Your PS3 will surely try to check the disc for errors. This could take a while, or be completed in just a few moments.

Method 02

Reset the video output settings

1. Make sure the PS3 is off. The power signal on the front should be red. If you’re changing the TV cables or HDMI cable, you have to do this reset if nothing appears on the screen when you turn on the PS3.

2. Unplug both the PS3 and the television from the outlet.

3. Make sure the PS3 is connected to the television via the HDMI cable.

4. Reconnect the PS3 and television to electricity.

5. Turn on the television and select the corresponding HDMI input.

6. Press the power button on the PS3 and hold it until you hear the second beep. This will take about 5 seconds.

7. Use the PS3 controller to finish adjusting the HDMI image. You may first need to press the PS button on the controller to turn it on.

8. Go to “Settings” → “Display Settings”. From here you can select the corresponding resolution

Method 03

Start the console in safe mode

1. Understand why you should use safe mode. The PS3’s safe mode gives you access to some diagnostic and repair tools that you can use to repair your system when it crashes often or when it experiences crashes. You can use safe mode to rebuild the file system or reset your PS3 to factory settings

2. Create a backup of your saved games. Before attempting to do repair work on the PS3 file system, it is always recommended to create a backup of your saved data in case something goes wrong. You can copy the data to a USB stick. The size of most save games varies between 5 and 20 MB. Insert the USB stick into your PS3. Navigate to the first game for which you want to create a copy. Press △ and select “Copy.” Select your USB stick and copy the file. Repeat these steps for all the save games you want to back up.

3. Turn off the PS3. To enter safe mode, you will first need to shut down the PS3.

4. Press the power button and hold it down. You will hear the first beep.

5. Continue holding the button until you hear a second and then a third beep. The system will turn on again and the light will turn red.

6. Again, press and hold the power button and you can hear the first and second beep.

7. Keep pressing the power button until you hear two short beeps. Release the power button.

8. Plug in a controller and turn it on. You cannot use the wireless controls in safe mode.

9. Use safe mode to reset your PS3. There are several options you can choose from that will help you troubleshoot the issues your PS3 is experiencing. Try each of them to see if one can fix them. If one doesn’t work, go to the next one.

Restore file system. This option will attempt to repair files on the hard drive that are damaged.

Rebuild database. This option will attempt to repair the information in the database on your hard drive. It will delete the messages and notifications. It will also delete the folders you have created. No files will be deleted.

Reset PS3 system. This option will restore the PS3 to its factory settings and everything on the hard drive will be deleted. Make sure you have created a backup of everything you want to save before continuing with this solution.
